Garage Door Opener Troubleshooting: Safe First Checks
A few safe observations that help explain an opener problem without dismantling the door or motor.
Observe before resetting
Note whether the motor runs, the lights flash, the door begins to move, or the system reverses. Those details help separate a control problem from a door-system problem.
Check the simple items
Confirm the opener has power, the remote batteries are working and nothing is visibly blocking the photo-eye path. Do not loosen springs, cables or structural hardware.
Know when to stop
If the door is crooked, unusually heavy, off track or connected to a broken spring, stop operating the opener. The door system should be inspected before the motor is tested again.
